Complexity and Risk Management in Supply Chains

We are pleased to announce and invite you to participate in the HICL 2007 Hamburg International Conference of Logistics, which will be held at Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH), Germany from 6 - 7 September 2007. This international conference is co-organized by the Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) and the Hamburg School of Logistics (HSL).
Theme and Objectives
Today's business environment is changing significantly due to a steady progress towards more efficient organizational paradigms as well as product and process innovations. Unfortunately, innovations are still mostly seen in the context of industrial production. This approach, however, does not match the current reality of modern economies. In Germany, for example, services accounted for over 70% of gross value and provided nearly 75% of employment in 2006. Thus, the impact of services on the economy is so high that their systematic development should be taken at least as seriously as that of products. As modern competition does not take place between individual companies but between entire supply chains, the emerging challenges have to be faced at the supply chain level. Where the goal used to be having an innovative company, there is now a need to construct innovative supply chains. Creating and managing innovations in supply chains will become one of the main differentiating aspects in a world of global competition.
Logistics is a key enabler of supply chain collaboration. Innovations in this field allow supply chains to increase their efficiency significantly and help to create further innovations in different areas. In this context, an important task is to find structures and approaches which enable all types of innovations in logistics and supply chains for a better fulfillment of customer needs. Another challenge is to handle the growing organizational complexity and the associated supply chain risks.
Some of the key questions are: How can innovations systematically come up in this environment? How can innovations be stimulated - not only technological innovations but process innovations as well? How to apply innovative technologies? Can innovations in logistics services be "engineered" in a structured procedure? Is it possible to apply methods of innovation management on innovations in logistics and supply chain management? How to implement technology driven logistical processes? What are impacts of innovations on logistics and supply chain management - benefits and risks? How should benefits of supply chain innovations be shared between supply chain partners?
Innovations in Logistics and Supply Chain Management - The HICL will provide a multidisciplinary network and forum for scientists and practitioners involved in logistics and supply chain management as well as in innovation management to interact with each other and exchange ideas and information on the latest issues in this field.
We welcome scientific and practical contributions from different disciplines such as Business Administration & Economics, Engineering, Computer Science, Science & Mathematics and Law.

Submission of Abstracts
Authors are invited to submit original and unpublished research results/best practices for consideration in HICL 2007. All papers will be double-blind refereed. Abstracts for papers should describe the nature and relevance of the problems, the research methodology, and work-in-progress or final research results. Abstracts must not exceed 500 words and should be in MS Word and PDF format. The font type for body text should be 'Arial' size 11 while the title size 12 with 'BOLD UPPER CASE'. Abstracts for Papers should include three to four keywords and all authors' contact information. The official conference language for abstracts, papers and presentation is English. Please submit the abstracts to:
